Train Smart. Train With Purpose.
I'm Charlie Harding, a British Triathlon qualified coach and elite triathlete who has been involved in the sport since I was seven years old.
My journey started as a young triathlete and eventually led me to the North West Academy and the England Next Gen Squad. Alongside racing, I studied Sport & Exercise Science at the University of Nottingham, developing a deeper understanding of the science behind training, performance and recovery.
I've also had the opportunity to race at the highest level of the sport. I competed as a guide on the World Class Performance Programme at the Commonwealth Games and Paralympic Games, and I now race individually at elite European Cups.
My own performance has included a 4:10 400m swim, 350W FTP and 14:38 5km. These experiences have given me first-hand insight into the physical demands, psychology and training required to perform at a high level.
Why I Coach
I started coaching while I was at university, initially because I wanted to help other athletes and share what I'd learned through my own experiences.
I quickly realised how much I enjoyed it.
What really drives me as a coach is seeing an athlete put the right training together and achieve something they didn't think was possible.
I've also become increasingly frustrated seeing athletes putting in huge amounts of work — doing the miles, training hard and sacrificing time — without getting the results they deserve because their training isn't properly structured.
More training isn't always better training.
That's where I believe good coaching makes the difference.
My Approach
I don't believe that being an elite athlete automatically makes someone a good coach.
What I do believe is that my experience as an athlete gives me another perspective that I can bring into my coaching.
As a British Triathlon qualified coach, I combine my formal coaching education with my experience as an elite athlete and my background in Sport & Exercise Science.
I know what demanding sessions feel like. I understand the psychology involved in pushing yourself towards a big goal. I've experienced the highs and lows of high-level competition, and I understand the commitment required to reach the top.
I use that knowledge to create training that has a purpose.
Every session should have a reason.
Every training block should move you towards your goal.
And your programme should fit around your life, not the other way around.
Train Smart
Whether you're training for your first triathlon, chasing a personal best, looking to qualify for a championship event or competing at the highest level, my aim is the same:
To help you train with purpose, make the most of your time and become the best athlete you can be.
If you're ready to train smarter, I'd love to hear about your goals.
